Legislation introduced in November 2021 states that any person wishing to become an LGV driver that holds a full car (Category B) driving licence must:

– Be 18 years of age
– Attend a drivers medical assessment
– Apply to the DVLA for a Provisional Category C Licence
– Take and pass the relevant theory Tests

HGV Provisional Licence

To obtain an HGV Provisional Licence you need two forms – D2 and D4 available to order from DVLA website.


D2 Licence Application Form
Make sure you apply for the correct provisional entitlement as follows:

For HGV tick the category “C” box.
Complete all further details required.

Photo-Card Licence Application Form.
You must apply for a photo-card licence at the time of your vocational application.
(Unless you currently hold a photo-card licence).

D4 Medical Report Form
Contact your Doctor and arrange an HGV Medical.
Take form D4 with you.
This will cost approximately £180.

When posting completed forms allow 3-4 weeks for your licence to be returned.

In the interim period you should select and purchase the study materials of your choice for your theory tests which must be sat and passed before sitting your driving tests. We can arrange everything you need in terms of study materials.
